Our journey through East Crete begins with an exciting off-road adventure to the stunning Cave of Milatos. There we will enjoy a soft hiking trail through the wild Cretan nature, allowing us to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area. The walk to nature will lead us to the historical cave, a place of great significance in Crete’s past. Once there, we immerse ourselves in the legends and history of Crete while collecting aromatic wild herbs. A perfect opportunity for memorable photos in the imposing gorge!
Next, we arrive at the traditional village of Fourni where time seems to have stopped in another era, offering us a glimpse of authentic Cretan life. Strolling through its small alleys, we will have the opportunity to speak to the locals and admire the old stone houses. This is also a great opportunity to enjoy a coffee at a local café.
From the mountains, we descend to the seaside village of Plaka, a picturesque fishing haven with breathtaking views of the bay and the historic island of Spinalonga. The infamous leper colony on Spinalonga, a stark reminder of a difficult chapter in Cretan history that inspired the BBC series “Who Pays the Ferryman” and the novel “Out of the Blue.” The azure waters, traditional fishing boats, and exotic coastal charm create an ideal setting for capturing beautiful memories. A few moments here allow us to take in the peaceful yet vibrant seaside ambiance.
We continue our adventure to the coastal village of Elounda. We take a walk along the remains of the Sunken City of Olous, a mysterious ancient city submerged beneath the crystal-clear waters. As we admire this hidden wonder, we enjoy the refreshing sea breeze and capture stunning photos of the breathtaking coastal views.
Finally, we will drive to Agios Nikolaos, a town famous for its scenic Voulismeni Lake in the center of it which is said to be bottomless. Whether you choose to take a leisurely walk around the lake, explore the vibrant streets, or relax with a coffee by the waterfront, this charming town offers the perfect ending to our half-day sightseeing tour.
Having experienced the diverse beauty of East Crete—from mountains and caves to traditional villages and seaside towns—we conclude our tour, taking home unforgettable memories of an authentic and scenic adventure!
